CHIMNEY SMOKE SHELF Fireplaces work on inversion, and that inversion process starts in the Smoke Shelf. The Smoke Shelf resides behind the angled part of the back wall of your fireplace. The fire in the fireplace heats up the back wall, which is made of fireclay mortar and transfers the heat to the Smoke Shelf behind it. Cold air above the chimney has to dropper the laws of inversion as there is now hot air below. As it travels down your chimney, it gets warmer.
